James Tavernier might be the Rangers captain but he is more than that to Philippe Clement.

And he isn’t the only one.

Managers usually look to their more senior players to lead from the front and be there for their less experienced

teammates who need guided through difficult moments on the pitch, when the boss’ shouts from the sidelines are

not quite enough. The Belgian has four who he knows he can count on as his “assistants on the pitch.”

Tavernier has been the captain for for almost six years and has led by example with an astonishing output and

Connor Goldson has been alongside him for most of that time helping his fellow Englishman to guide the team. John

Lundstram has marshalled the midfield for the past few seasons while Jack Butland only

signed in the summer but is already one of the key dressing room figures.

Clement told TNT Sports: “With Jack Butland, Tav, Connor Goldson and Lunny, they are all players who are like my

assistants on the pitch to help with the story and to keep control of the story in the moments when the storm is going

on and it’s more difficult for the younger players.
