Tam McManus has proposed a points deduction for profane chanting at Rangers’ game against Hibernian on Sunday (10 March).

On Wednesday (13 March), the pundit remarked on the Daily Record website that the unprintable chanting from Gers fans towards Hibs forward Martin Boyle during the encounter at Easter Road was “terrible” and “sickening”.

When asked about potential fines that could be imposed on clubs for their fans’ conduct,

McManus responded that docking points could be “the way forward,” but acknowledged that such a move would cause “mayhem.”

“Hibs’ statement acknowledges the problem with their own support,” McManus continued.

“It’s time for other clubs to follow suit. Sunday appeared to be the final straw.

The comments directed against Martin Boyle by Rangers fans were appalling and cannot be reproduced in this medium. Sickening.

“Do not believe this is solely for the Rangers. Every club has a problem element.

It can be found practically everywhere. Hibs have endured enough, and they do not want to subject their players or fans to it again.

They want fans to feel at comfortable while attending games. Will reducing allocations make a difference?

Does it matter whether there are 3,500 or 1,500 people? The chanting continues to be heard, producing concern.

“The chanting, particularly by the Old Firm, is unacceptable, but how can it be stopped?

Should we start fining clubs? This will have little effect on the best clubs unless large penalties are levied.

“Should we go all-out and start docking team points? Maybe this is the way forward.

The government will enforce it, but imagine the fury. It would be chaotic.

The essential truth is that this is a society issue, and individuals must notice when things are out of order.”

After the Rangers incident, obscene chants have no place in sport.

It is certainly an issue in Scottish football, and the authorities will find it tough to solve given how long it has persisted.
