Speaking on the most recent episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old said the 28-year-old is “getting on a bit” and wouldn’t be considered a “marquee signing” for the Gers. He previously held executive positions at Everton and Aston Villa, as well as serving as CEO at Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen from 2000 to 2004. Currently, he runs a football consultancy that advises elite clubs.

Shankland has made attempts to sign the Hearts talisman during the mid-season and has been frequently linked to a possible move to Rangers.

With 38 games played, Shankland has scored 27 goals for the Edinburgh club, who are now third in the Scottish Premiership.

He arrived from Belgian side Beerschot in 2022 and has a contract at Tynecastle until May 2025.

“Shankland would not cost big money,” Wyness stated on the Insider Track podcast of Football Insider.

“Despite being a tremendous scorer, he is getting on in years. In the past, he has moved for between £1-2 million—not large sums of money.

You can expect one or two successful seasons out of a player of that caliber.

“I wouldn’t really characterize him as a marquee player.

They’ll go for the players Clement desires because, in my opinion, he has a keen sense of who players need.

“I believe it’s time for Rangers to invest as much as possible and get their manager back.”
