Coleman Shelton‘s journey through the NFL has been one of patience and perseverance. Despite going undrafted from the University of Washington, he refused to be deterred, gradually earning his place in the league. Initially facing limited playing time, Shelton steadily climbed the ranks to become a sought-after free-agent center.

His latest move sees him joining the Chicago Bears on a one-year deal, marking a departure from the Los Angeles Rams after five seasons. While the financial details of the contract remain undisclosed, the 28-year-old, standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 299 pounds, brings considerable experience to his new team.

Hailing from Pasadena, California, Shelton’s roots lie close to his heart, having played a significant role for the Rams, starting 32 games, including all 17 in the previous season and 13 in 2022. Notably, Pro Football Focus ranked him as the NFL’s 16th-best center, highlighting his impact within his position group.

Now embarking on a new chapter in Chicago, Shelton finds himself reunited with former University of Washington teammate, cornerback Kyler Gordon. Under the mentorship of coach Steve Sarkisian, Shelton showcased remarkable versatility during his college years, serving as a team captain and demonstrating proficiency across various positions on the offensive line. His versatility was unparalleled, starting at all five positions along the front wall in 47 out of 53 games from 2013 to 2017.

While Shelton’s NFL journey initially began with the San Francisco 49ers before a stint on the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad, it was with the Rams that he truly made his mark, appearing in 73 games, including the victorious Super Bowl LVI in 2022. His tenacity and adaptability have undoubtedly been key factors in his success, and as he begins this new chapter in Chicago, Shelton continues to exemplify the resilience and determination that define his career.
