2024 NFL Free Agency: Seahawks sign Packers safety target

Over the last five seasons, the 30-year-old safety has appeared in all 79 games for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Los Angeles Chargers when he has been available.

The Jaguars cut him earlier this month, freeing up $5.1 million in cap space in the process.

The Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers, and Green Bay Packers were among the three teams the then-unrestricted free agent was scheduled to visit after being released, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

That was also the itinerary for the visits, with the Packers coming in third. Sadly for them, Green Bay never really had an opportunity to sign the veteran because he signed with the first team that brought him in.

The specifics of Jenkins’ new contract with the Seahawks are still undisclosed.

The Packers still need assistance at safety even after signing former New York Giant Xavier McKinney to a four-year, $68 million contract.

Darnell Savage, Jonathan Owens, and Rudy Ford—three defensive backs whose contracts with the Packers expired today—were their three most-used safeties last season.

Savage has already committed to the Jaguars, and in free agency, Owens signed a two-year contract with the Chicago Bears, their rival team. Ford can still sign deals.

In the Packers’ new single-high safety defence

In the Packers’ new single-high safety defence, McKinney is anticipated to play free safety, thus the team needs a potent addition at safety to go with him.

The only other safeties that are currently under contract with the Packers are former practice squad member Tyler Coyle, former undrafted rookie Benny Sapp III, special teamer Zayne Anderson, and second-year free safety Anthony Johnson Jr.

It’s a bit of a star and scrubs room right now, to put it mildly.

The following safeties were considered among the top 150 players in the free agency class heading into this week, according to The Athletic:

Justin Simmons, rank #22; Kyle Dugger (#58) Julian Blackmon #75, Marcus Maye #75, Quandre Diggs #112, Tashaun Gipson Sr. #115, and #130 Jamal Adams #150 Jordan Fuller

As free agency progresses, don’t be shocked if the Packers try to locate a reliable value signing at the position.
