Patrick Mahomes undertakes a contract restructuring aimed at providing the Chiefs with substantial cap space

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is making a strategic move by restructuring his deal, seeking to offer the team with up to $21.6 million in more funding for the offseason.

Mahomes, who signed a rich 10-year, $450 million contract with the Chiefs in July 2020,

was initially expected to have a $58.6 million cap charge in 2024. However, this figure is projected to fall significantly as the club prepares for their third consecutive Super Bowl victory,

which would be an unprecedented three-peat in NFL history.

The Chiefs wasted no time in boosting their roster, signing great defensive tackle Chris Jones to a rich five-year contract extension worth $158.75 million, including a significant practical guarantee of $95.3 million.

Following this significant investment in the 29-year-old defensive dynamo, Kansas City chose to renegotiate Mahomes’ deal, providing extra financial flexibility.

Aside from Jones’ contract extension, the Chiefs have taken proactive steps to secure other key players, such as tight

end Irv Smith Jr., and punter Matt Araiza, who joined the team in February.

This isn’t the first time Mahomes and Kansas City have changed his deal to better suit the team’s financial condition.

Last summer, they reached a similar agreement, freeing up $2.5 million in cap space.

However, the most recent reorganization is a more significant move, demonstrating the team’s ambition to secure its position in NFL history with a stunning third consecutive title victory.
