Patrick Mahomes undertakes a contract restructuring aimed at providing the Chiefs with substantial cap space

According to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday, quarterback Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs

is strategically altering his deal in an effort to give the franchise an extra $21.6 million for the offseason.

Mahomes was originally expected to have a sizable $58.6 million cap hit in 2024. However, in July 2020, he signed a

lucrative 10-year, $450 million contract with the Chiefs. This number, though, is anticipated to drop significantly as

the team prepares to try to win the Super Bowl three times in a row, which would be an NFL record three-peat.

The Chiefs wasted no time in bolstering their roster, securing star defensive tackle Chris Jones with a lucrative five-

which includes a substantial practical guarantee of $95.3 million.

After making this significant investment in the 29-year-old defensive star, Kansas City decided to give Mahomes

more financial flexibility by restructuring his deal.

The Chiefs have been aggressive in acquiring other important players, including as tight end Irv Smith Jr., and they

also added punter Matt Araiza to their squad in February, in addition to Jones’s contract extension.

Mahomes and Kansas City have modified his contract in the past to best suit the team’s financial circumstances.

They came to a similar understanding last offseason, which released $2.5 million in cap space.
