Former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Willie Gay Jr. has found a new home in the short term after finishing his first

season with the Chiefs, as news surfaced that he will sign a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints.

According to NFL analyst Mike Garafolo, Gay’s contract for the 2024 season is worth up to $5 million.

Gay will be joined in New Orleans by Tyrann Mathieu, Khalen Saunders, and Tanoh Kpassagnon, all former Chiefs.

Gay joined the Chiefs as a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the same rookie class that laid the groundwork

for the team’s promising young defensive core. L’Jarius Sneed and Mike Danna were both part of the same rookie

class, and all three are looking for a large payout after leading the Chiefs to the pinnacle.

After years of experimenting with free agents to fill in (poorly) at linebacker, the Chiefs began a gradual rebuild of the position with high-level draft picks in consecutive seasons. Gay was the first, setting a new standard for

athleticism at the position. Following that, Nick Bolton and Leo Chenal joined the club, transforming the roster’s weakest position into one of its strongest.

It’s likely that the Chiefs would have been interested in re-signing Gay at the right price, but the team went with Drue Tranquill after signing him to a one-year deal last spring to fill the position. Following a great season, the Chiefs

signed Tranquill to a three-year contract before free agency began, marking the end of Gay’s stint with the Chiefs.

Gay appeared in 57 games and started 47 of them over four seasons with the Chiefs. Last season, he recorded 58 total tackles, three fumble recoveries, four pass deflections, and one interception for Kansas City.
