Matt Rempe will have a disciplinary hearing and could be suspended by the Rangers.

The NHL Department of Player Safety will hold a hearing for Matt Rempe on Tuesday. After elbowing New Jersey Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler during Monday’s 3-1 victory at Madison Square Garden, the rookie for the New York Rangers faces a possible suspension.

The incident happened soon after Rempe, at 19:08 of the second period, won a face-off and screened Devils goalkeeper Kaapo Kahkonen on Erik Gustafsson’s goal, which gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead. Rempe crossed the ice to check Siegenthaler, who was putting the puck into New York’s half of the rink, twenty-two seconds later. Siegenthaler took a step backward, and Rempe, looking a little crazy, charged in, elbowing the Devils blue-liner in the jaw.

Rempe’s hearing was held on Tuesday after he received a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct for the hit. Siegenthaler walked off the rink and didn’t play again.

Coach Peter Laviolette remarked, “I thought he was playing a really strong game, total credit on the goal.” “We ultimately abandoned him there. I believe he was simply following a hit, but I hope Siegenthaler is alright. Rempe, in my opinion, had been playing well up until that time.

As Rempe was being brought off the ice by officials, he chirped at the New Jersey bench. Following the game, Devils enforcer Kurtis MacDermid delivered some scathing criticism of Rempe. Throughout the game, MacDermid attempted to bait Rempe into a brawl, but the 6-foot-8 forward refrained, leaving the veteran Devils player visibly irritated.
