Sunderland have been mentioned as a potential summer transfer destination for Celtic winger Mikey Johnston.

The school product has struggled to make a consistent impression for the Hoops,

but he has made 92 appearances for the Premier League club where he began his career.

As minutes appeared to be limited under Brendan Rodgers,

he moved on loan to West Bromwich Albion in the English Championship in January.

He’ll be at the Hawthorns until the end of the season, but Baggies fans are already hoping he stays.

He has impressed with six goals in nine appearances, prompting questions about what may come next.

According to pundit Carlton Palmer, Celtic could command a sum of up to £3 million for Johnston,

with Sunderland an obvious destination, though Norwich City has also been mentioned.

The former England and West Brom midfielder told Football League World:

“Mikey Johnston has maintained his flying time at West Brom since he signed on loan in the January transfer window,

netting his sixth goal for West Bromwich Albion in their most recent victory over Huddersfield Town.

“He’s having a great time since joining Celtic on loan. Yes, a lot of clubs will be taking note of the manner that he’s playing,

so you will be looking at clubs who will be looking at players moving on, like Jack Clarke and [Jon] Rowe will be moving on,

and people will be looking at Mikey Johnston as a possible replacement.

“But he’s having a great time at West Brom and enjoys his football there.

He still has a contract with his parent club, Celtic, and no fee has been written into his contract,

so it’s unclear whether West Brom will be able to finance him with the new owners in place.

“However, given his outstanding form for West Bromwich Albion, Norwich,

Sunderland, and other potential Championship clubs will undoubtedly be keeping an eye on the situation.”

With Sunderland’s goal of attempting to buy young players and get them in cheap,

I don’t think Johnston will fall into that, since I believe Celtic will be looking for at least £2 million or £3 million given his form in the Championship.

“So whether Sunderland have the money to pay that, Norwich do have the money to pay for Mikey Johnston,

so we’ll have to see come the end of the season, but he’s certainly done great things at West Brom and [is] attracting a lot of attention.”
