Trade Proposal Sends Chiefs a 27-Year-Old WR in Exchange for 2 Draft Picks
Trade Proposal Sends Chiefs a 27-Year-Old WR in Exchange for 2 Draft Picks
The Kansas City Chiefs have the option to trade for a wide receiver even though they can increase their wide receiver
room through free agency and/or the draft.
For this reason, Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report has assembled a trade package that he thinks will enable the
Chiefs to acquire wide receiver Diontae Johnson of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In an article in which Davenport breaks down the top NFL trade packages for Johnson, Davenport has the two-time
defending Super Bowl champions sending a 2024 third-round pick and fifth-round pick to the Steelers in exchange
for Johnson and a 2024 sixth-round pick.
Davenport wrote on March 9 that the Chiefs may potentially pivot with the 32nd pick by trading for Johnson,
addressing needs in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Considering that Kansas City is as close to a “win now”
squad as it gets, Veach may be prepared to part with the 95th pick to acquire a dependable wide receiver. Johnson
would be more than happy to play beside Patrick Mahomes.
Diontae Johnson in Need of Fresh Start
Johnson, 27, was selected by the Steelers in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, 66th overall, out of Toledo.
Johnson, who is 5-foot-10 and weighs 183 pounds, lacks the physicality to dominate NFL cornerbacks. To help him
get open frequently, though, his excellent footwork, quickness, and shiftiness outweigh his size and speed (he ran a
4.53 40-yard dash to the NFL Scouting Combine).
In 2021, QB Ben Roethlisberger’s final season in Pittsburgh, Johnson had his greatest season to date. According to
PFF, Johnson had career highs in those categories that season: targets (166),
receptions (107), receiving yards (1,161), and touchdowns (8).
Johnson’s output suffered after Roethlisberger left in 2022 and was replaced by quarterbacks Mitch Trubisky and
Kenny Pickett, as well as wide receiver George Pickens.
Johnson’s 2023 season had some of his lowest single-season totals since his rookie season (51 catches, 717 receiving
yards, 5 touchdowns), following his 2022 season of catching 86 passes for 882 yards.
