‘Taking action’ – Ian Blackford speaks out

Following the sectarian singing directed
at Martin Boyle during Sunday night’s
Scottish Cup match, Hibs made a daring
move and issued a statement.
There was widespread condemnation
from all football supporters and analysts
as the Hibs striker lay unconscious on
the ground, with the Ibrox support
chanting, “Die a fenian b-st-rd.”
Perhaps not the commentators, though.
consistently turn a deaf ear to this type
of singing while, astonishingly, not only
hearing but even apologizing for any
profanity picked up by their
microphones.
But now that Westminster MP Ian
Blackford has entered the discussion,
perhaps—just perhaps—this will reveal
the sectarian curse that has plagued our
sport for many years.
Blackford has entered Scottish football
for the second time this week after
criticizing the officiating work done
during his team’s 2-0 loss to Rangers.
Although his earlier tweet criticizing the
match officials is unlikely to have any
effect, perhaps the Westminster MP’s
intervention in the controversy will
encourage the SFA and the SPFL to take
measures to eradicate this disease from
our game.
I could be overly optimistic, and my
cynical side tells me he intervened only
because Celtic wasn’t involved.
The fact is that Blackford, along with
other politicians in Scotland and the UK,
tends to remain curiously silent on issues
involving Celtic.
