Michael Stewart claims that John Lundstram is a “crucial” member of the Rangers team and that replacing him would be very costly.

During the 2-0 Scottish Cup victory over Hibs on March 10, the pundit stated in real time on Viaplay Sports that filling the void left by the midfielder’s departure this summer would require “a lot of money” and carry additional dangers.

Lundstram, a former player for Sheffield United, is now negotiating a new contract with the Gers because his existing one expires at the end of the current campaign.

“Looking to replace someone like that costs a lot of money, and also you’ve got to hope that the person settles into the team,” Stewart stated at 7:30 p.m.

“He’s an essential component of this side in that pivotal section of the park.”

Philippe Clement and John Lundstram want the Rangers to stay.

Stewart is correct about this circumstance, notwithstanding some of his other statements made during the Easter Road game, thus securing a new Ibrox contract for the Englishman appears to be a top priority going into the summer.

As one of the pundits’ favorites in the Gers lineup, Lundstram appears to be in a similar situation to Philippe Clement because the Belgian has helped the player regain form and makes use of him whenever feasible.

The addition of Mohamed Diomande has strengthened the midfield as well, but his “huge” £4.5 million cost shows that reaching a deal with Lundstram will be significantly more economical than trying to find a different, possibly younger player to fill the position.

His age of thirty puts him squarely in the range where some players begin to falter or slow down, while others may still have years to go at this level.

Both Ryan Jack and Steven Davis are debatably excellent representatives of either group, and as the latter is no longer with the Ibrox team after retiring from the game at the age of 39, while the former is still sidelined at the age of 32 due to injury, it is perhaps more important to reach an agreement.

While Clement has been permitted to speak with international teams for the past two months and has shown no signs of looking elsewhere, both he and Lundstram have made it clear that they want their relationship to continue. However, there is no assurance that the ongoing discussions will result in a successful outcome.
