“I want to play”- £13k-per-week star cries out
Gustaf Lagerbielke has stated that he wants to play, as the central defender struggles to break into Brendan Rodgers’ first team.
The Swedish international was on the bench for Rodgers’ Scottish Cup triumph over Livingston,
where his team conceded two cheap goals to David Martindale’s side.
Lagerbielke was signed by Celtic after being suggested by Carl Starfelt’s agent, who moved to La Liga to join Celta Vigo.
The £3 million transfer was believed to be a replacement for his compatriot, with Maik Nawrocki also joining in the summer.
However, the deal has not gone out as predicted,
with the Swedish center defender making just nine games and scoring one goal—the triumph against Feyenoord in the UCL.
Despite this, the defender is eager to make an impact in the season’s closing stretch as Celtic aim to win both the League and the Scottish Cup.
Lagerbielke told Aftonbladet that he needs to keep proving Rodgers that he can play,
but he will consider his future in the summer.
“So right now, the focus is on training as much as possible and trying to demonstrate that I intend to play.
“We can still win the double because we are competing with Rangers for the league title and still in the cup.
“There are two titles to play for. I want to play and will do everything I can to help the squad.
“At the same time, I know that I can play in the best leagues, so it’s a situation we will look at after the season.”
With Maik Nawrocki out injured and CCV’s injury being handled, Rodgers paired Liam Scales and Stephen Welsh at the back;
nonetheless, the two struggled to deal with the ferocity of the Livi assault, which will concern Rodgers.
Hopefully Nawrocki and Carter-Vickers will return after the international break,
but before then, Rodgers could consider bringing Lagerbielke into the team.
