Breaking News: Free-agent has just given Rangers fresh hope of signing him
Gijs Smal has acknowledged that he will probably leave FC Twente this summer, but the left-back is a positive sign
for Rangers as he maintains that his rumored transfer to Eredivisie winners Feyenoord is not finalized yet.
With two months left in the current campaign, speculations surfaced on Friday indicating that Gijs Smal had inked a
long-term deal with Feyenoord. Naturally,
FC Twente supporters were not shy about expressing their disappointment.
During Twente’s 2-1 victory over Sparta Rotterdam on Saturday, Smal’s first touch was met with a lot of jeers from
the home crowd, who were obviously not impressed by rumors that one of their star players had agreed to join
Feyenoord, who were only six points ahead of them in the table and competing
with the left-back’s current employers for second place.
It’s no secret that Smal believes 2017 to be his final season at Enschede. However, the highly sought-after 26-year-
old has given the Glasgow giants a welcome boost as he says that no decision has been made yet over his next
destination. Rangers are also intrigued on a guy who led the Eredivisie’s assist charts last season.
Rangers given fresh hope by Gijs Smal
Naturally, my phone blew up. After fifteen minutes, I put it away,” Smal exclaims to ESPN. “I discussed it with
Arnold Bruggink, the director, and the coach. You are aware that such a thing is possible.
How would you get ready for that? As soon as I get the initial pass, the crowd begin to whistle. In a sense, I get it.
“Since there is nothing yet, I found it odd that anything like this would emerge nevertheless. Let me be clear: I would
be dishonest if I claimed to have never spoken to Feyenoord. Since I am a free transfer, I’m orienting myself.
“I have also been in contact with other clubs. Only now,
they are pretending I am already a Feyenoord player, and that is simply not true.”
Feyenoord deal not done yet
Smal is still on Rangers’ radar after Philippe Clement’s team expressed interest in January, according to Rotterdam-
based journal 1908. Borna Barisic is also out of contract, but Smal, who is acquainted to the club’s director of football
and former PSV head Nils Koppen, would make a good alternative.
Barisic’s accurate delivery from deep and in set-piece scenarios is also possessed by the Twente ace.
Smal continues, “I recognize that the supporters are sad that I am leaving on a free transfer from their standpoint.
“That’s not the case yet, but there’s very little chance I’ll renew.”
Rangers are still quite interested in Jefte Vital. The Brazilian was under contract with loan club APOEL Nicosia, thus
the Gers were unable to complete a deal for him even though they had negotiated terms with Fluminense in January.
