DEAL SEALED: Salary Details for New Chris Jones Contract.

When it was reported on Saturday night that the Kansas City Chiefs and All-Pro

defensive tackle Chris Jones had reached a big multiyear contract,

it sent the football world into a frenzy.

Jones will remain in Kansas City for next seasons,

which will probably coincide with

the majority or all of his prime,

thanks to the five-year agreement. With some time having passed, both parties’

perspectives on the Jones contract are becoming clearer.

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk wrote a piece on Sunday night that goes into greater

depth about the terms of Jones’s contract.

Florio’s report states that the contract is for $158.75 million over five years.

It can be imaginatively seen as a three-year agreement with practical promises for

those years totaling $95.3M.

The Chiefs have some flexibility in the long run, and contract restructures may affect

the long-term calculations.

Jones will receive a $30 million signing bonus. Of it, $18 million is due by April 5 of

this year, and the remaining $12 million is due the next year.

The details of which monies are guaranteed at signing and when other guarantees

take effect are fully explained in Florio’s essay.

Below is a basic outline of the allegedly finalized arrangement as of right now:

  • 2024: $1.25M base salary, $100,000 offseason workout bonus
  • 2025: $13.75M base salary, $15M roster bonus, $100,000 offseason workout bonus
  • 2026: $19M base salary, $16M roster bonus, $100,000 offseason workout bonus
  • 2027: $28.25M base salary, $100,000 offseason workout bonus
  • 2028: $35M base salary, $100,000 offseason workout bonus

Joshua Brisco of Arrowhead Report wrote on the Jones contract on Saturday night,

explaining why the timing appears right.

Without Jones as the core of the defense, it was difficult to see the Chiefs completing a potential three-peat.

Jones has been the finest and most important defender of the team’s still-developing dynasty.

At the end of the day, I believe the Chiefs are placing their wager on Jones continuing

to be at the top of his game at ages 30 and 31 before he becomes a highly skilled but

maybe not unique player at age 32.

Jones’s outstanding Chiefs career will come to a fitting finale for all parties if he can

maintain that pace and the Chiefs win at least one Super Bowl during that time.

After accounting for the prorated signing bonus,

Jones’s combination of a low basic salary and workout bonus seems to result in a

manageable 2024 salary cap hit, according to some quick salary cap arithmetic.

For an early cap amount, preliminary estimates come in at a mere $7.35M on the books.

Conner Christopherson from Arrowhead Report discussed how Jones’s projected

$34.85 million cap charge in 2025 might be reorganized on X on Sunday.

Kansas City saves money up front with this distribution, but moving forward, it will

need to find other ways to maneuver.

But they’ve given themselves permission to do so.

Since cornerback L’Jarius Sneed‘s $19.8 million franchise tag is deducted from the

current salary cap,

more changes are undoubtedly in the horizon.

The Chiefs are in a unique situation right now. As the team looks to win three

straight Super Bowls, Jones, Patrick Mahomes, and Travis Kelce—their

championship core—are all under contract.

Permission to search for trade interest has been granted to Sneed and his group, but

this hasn’t materialized into a deal yet.

Prior to the commencement of free agency on Wednesday, Kansas City can take

advantage of some cap relief with the trading of Sneed or the reorganization of Mahomes.

But with Jones, they got their biggest fish, so everything else is suddenly secondary.

The CEO of ‘Sack Nation’ is back in town as the defending champions get ready for a new league season.
