Celtic sign former Portugal international for free to replace Liel Abada
After leaving Celtic, Liel Abada completed his move to Charlotte FC of the Major League Soccer, reportedly for a fee of about £10 million.
The winger, who even in September signed a four-year contract deal, had been a vital member of the team. However, given the situation, it was most likely best for everyone to leave.
However, Celtic may have a difficult time in replacing Abada.
The team has definitely missed the winger’s contribution, who hasn’t played much this season. Over the previous two seasons, he did contribute 48 goals to the score.
Although Yang Hyun-jun had been playing well lately, he was sent off against Hearts,
demonstrating that he still has a lot of growing to do at this level. After signing in January, Nicolas Kuhn hasn’t made an impression.
Thus, Celtic could use a seasoned winger right now, even if just temporarily.
And there may be a free agent who fits that description.
To replace Abada, Celtic may recruit a former Portugal international for nothing.
Ever since October of last year, Helder Costa has been without a club. By mutual agreement, he left Leeds United.
Costa, however, has a respectable lineage. He began his career with Benfica and has since played for AS Monaco in Ligue 1,
Valencia and Deportivo de La Coruna in La Liga, Leeds United and Wolves in the Premier League, and AS Monaco in Ligue 1.
Costa even played for the Portugal national squad, scoring against Scotland, incidentally. He has been the international representative of Angola since 2021.
Naturally, there would also be doubts about signing Costa. It’s been months since he last played football competitively.
Is there any chance he may join Celtic and be ready for the last game of the season?
If Costa is signed by Celtic on a contract that runs until the conclusion of the current campaign with a chance to extend,
they might not have much to lose. He should still have a lot of football left in him at age thirty.
