After their January attempt failed, Rangers target is now one step closer to switching to Ibrox.
The Rangers’ interest in Jefte Vital in the latter part of the January transfer window was likely enough to turn even his mind.
After Philippe Clement’s team reached an agreement with Fluminenese for the Brazilian left-back, Jefte went missing while on loan at APOEL Nicosia. After the deal fell through, Jefte felt compelled to issue an apology for his conduct.
He posted an apology on Instagram to “all APOEL fans, my teammates, the coach, the president, and the entire club staff, for my absence.” “I decided to leave at the time of the incident because I didn’t feel like I could help the club.”
If Jefte hadn’t had a contract with APOEL until the conclusion of the current season, the 20-year-old most likely would be playing for the Rangers right now.
Rangers are still considering Jefte Vital.
Of course, he still might be in the future. After Borna Barisic’s contract ends this summer, there will be space at Ibrox for a new left-sided defender, even though Ridvan Yilmaz has improved greatly under Philippe Clement.
Rangers are considering several left-backs than Jefte. Jefte’s ambitions of making that late move to the blue side of Glasgow, however, seem to have received a timely boost as another one of their targets, Gijs Smal, has apparently agreed to join Feyenoord, the reigning Eredivisie winners, in July.
At the end of the current season, Smal will join Feyenoord when his contract with FC Twente expires, according to Voetbal International. Consequently, it seems that one of Jefte’s main opponents is no longer in the picture. Smal’s transfer to Rotterdam has increased the Rio-born flyer’s chances of joining fellow countryman Danilo at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
At Ibrox, Borna Barisic will need to be replaced.
With ten assists, Smal led the Eredivisie in assists during the previous season.
But Jefte, who takes great satisfaction in his “skill and creativity” and looks up to Real Madrid legend Marcelo, is no stranger to making significant plays in the closing third. With three goals and four assists for APOEL, Jefte could prove to be a wise addition for the Rangers, who frequently rely on their full-backs to open up deep-lying backlines and typically dominate possession domestically.
