Breaking News: Cowboys awarded two compensatory draft selections
Texas’s Rio Grande City The 32 compensatory draft selections for the 2024 NFL Draft were formally released by the NFL in Detroit.
Due to free agent departures from the prior season, the Cowboys were awarded two selections. The two picks are Pick 39 (173 overall) in the fifth round and Pick 41 (216 overall) in the sixth round.
The fifth and sixth round selections were given out in response to the departures of Dalton Schultz and Connor McGovern, respectively.
The Cowboys lost out on a seventh-round selection with Noah Brown’s departure because the player was ranked just outside of the top 32 in the league’s compensatory pick requirements.
The Cowboys will now formally begin the second part of the draft cycle with seven picks in the April draft.
As compensation for Jonathan Hankins (No. 234), they also possess the seventh-round selection (No. 245) and Nos. 173 and 216, the two compensatory selections.
They also retain the original selections they made in the first, second, third, and seventh rounds (picks Nos. 24, 56, 87, and 245).
And in the fourth, fifth, and sixth rounds (traded away for Trey Lance, Stephon Gilmore, and Brandin Cooks, respectively), they won’t have their first picks.
A variety of positions, including defensive tackle, running back, offensive line, and cornerback, have needs for the offseason before free agency.
Cowboys anticipation
With 16 future free agents and limited cost space available, the Cowboys probably expect to have a good amount of compensatory selections in 2025 if most of the expiring contracts find new homes this offseason.
In fact, Dak Prescott, DaRon Bland, and Dalton Schultz have all made noteworthy contributions recently, and Larry Allen is the first former compensatory pick to be elected into the Hall of Fame. The Cowboys have a history of success with compensatory picks.
