After ‘falling from chair’ in a Lisbon hotel, a young Rangers fan was declared dead.

The 25-year-old passed away yesterday, the Ibrox football club revealed this morning, following his trip to the Portuguese city with friends.

It was revealed today that Thomas McAllister, a tragic Rangers supporter,

was declared dead after tumbling off a chair at a Lisbon hotel.

He had traveled to the Portuguese city with friends to see his team’s Europa League match against Benfica.

Portuguese police said this afternoon that they have opened an inquiry into his death,

but they did not yet have any evidence that his death was connected to any criminal activity.

“Police and other emergency responders were called after the dead man fell off a chair in the lobby of a hotel close to Benfica’s ground,”

said a source with knowledge of the current investigation.

“Although the inquiry is still underway,

there is currently no evidence to suggest he was pushed or that the death may have been tied to a crime.

Really, there isn’t much more that can be said at this point.

Among other things, the investigation will look at whether alcohol or drugs had any role in this young man’s demise.

A well-placed insider stated he understood the event happened during last night’s match, not after.

Officials have not disclosed the name of the hotel or stated they were unable to provide an exact time for the occurrence.

“It is with profound sadness Rangers FC has been informed supporter Thomas McAllister has passed away in Lisbon following last night’s UEFA Europa League tie with Benfica,”

read a statement released by the team earlier today.

“The immediate thoughts of everyone at the club are with Thomas’ family and friends,

and we will remain in constant contact with both the Portuguese and British authorities over this tragic incident.”

James Bisgrove, CEO of the Rangers, said: “I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to Thomas’s family, friends, and loved ones on behalf of the club.

“This news has been tremendously upsetting for everyone at the club, as I’m sure it will be for all of our supporters. There’s no reason why somebody would attend a football game and then stay home.

“The club stands ready to assist Thomas’ family in whatever way we can in the coming days and weeks.”

Mr McAllister, a father from Glasgow’s northwest suburb of Drumchapel, was known to his friends as Tam.

Only hours before the disaster, he had shared a photo from Lisbon on Facebook.

A buddy posted on Facebook, saying, “Yet another depressing day in Drumchapel.” It hurts to take Tam, I am at a loss for words. We shall really miss you.

“It is unbelievable and heartbreaking,” stated Abbi Sinclair. Everyone will really miss you, Tam. RIP.”

The game at the Estadio da Luz last night resulted in a 2-2 draw. Next Thursday, the two teams square off at Ibrox once more.
