49ers trade rumors: Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack trade bids are being considered by the Chargers

Two edge rushers who have some connection to the 49ers are allegedly being evaluated by the Chargers.

Many of the top personalities on the squad are being shopped by the Los Angeles Chargers,

per a report by ESPN’s Dianna Russini. Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack, two edge rushers, are on that list.

It’s plausible that the San Francisco 49ers are searching for edge improvements to support Nick Bosa, and either guy would fit in well there.

Despite Bosa and Mack’s stellar resumes, Russini implies that a lot of teams are hoping the Chargers will cut them.

There has already been conjecture that the Bosa brothers may rejoin the 49ers due to early offseason speculations.

Although they did not have the chance to play together while attending Ohio State,

the Bosa brothers might be able to rectify that in the NFL.

Although Joey has occasionally been among the NFL’s top pass rushers, he has also had trouble staying healthy.

Over the previous two seasons, he has made just 14 appearances. Granted,

he has recorded 9.0 sacks in that little amount of playing time.

Bosa’s $135 million, five-year contract is coming to an end in just two years.

His deal would result in a $22 million cap charge in 2024 and a $23.36 million cap hit in 2025 if he was acquired in a trade without a restructuring.

After the 2024 campaign, Bosa would be free to be released by the 49ers without incurring any dead money.

Mack’s current deal is only good for another year. A $23.25 million cap charge for him in 2024 would result from his deal if he was acquired in a trade without a restructuring.

Mack is coming off one of his best seasons to date, despite turning 33 in February.

During the previous season, he participated in almost 80% of the defensive plays made by the Chargers,

recording 74 tackles and a career-high 17 sacks.

The 49ers have a long-standing affection for Mack,

going back to when they supposedly made repeated first-round selection offers in an attempt to sign him away from the Oakland Raiders.

Rather, Mack was dealt by the Raiders to the Bears, who then dealt him to the Chargers following four seasons.

But if they stayed with the Chargers, Mack and Bosa would both have cap hits above $35 million.

Teams are reportedly hoping that the Chargers will eventually release them so they can become free agents,

according to Russini‘s report, as Los Angeles gets ready to deal with a challenging salary cap position this summer.

It’s difficult to determine if the 49ers would be better off signing a free agent or making a trade to get an edge rusher.

Bosa and Mack have never been a part of a club that has advanced far in the playoffs. Bosa and Mack have a strong familial bond and a history in the Bay Area,

so it seems sense that the Niners would be among their top picks.

However, considering how many teams are still searching for one impact edge rusher who is above average,

San Francisco is unlikely to be willing to outbid every other NFL team.
