The “bizarre” sale of David Turnbull and Alexandro Bernabei’s abrupt exit from the Scottish Premiership winners have puzzled Celtic veteran Chris Sutton.

The Hoops’ board has recently faced a great deal of criticism for the players Celtic has brought to Parkhead—many of Brendan Rodgers’ acquisitions have been charming to deceive thus far. However, there are also concerns regarding the players the team let go.

For a meager £2 million, Celtic traded David Turnbull, a player who had earlier in the season benched the powerful Reo Hatate. Prior to joining Cardiff City in January, Turnbull also scored seven goals in just nine league starts. Rodgers was forced to deploy 18-year-old Daniel Kelly at the back end of last week’s 2-0 loss to Hearts as a result of Turnbull’s rather mysterious departure.

Alexandro Bernabei‘s departure has left Sutton similarly perplexed. Not because the Argentine was a standout player under Rodgers—on the few occasions he did start, the player struggled at both ends of the field—but rather because Celtic’s roster lacked a left-back backup.

Celtic bench three players from their first team.

“Why in the world did Celtic let Alexandro Bernabei go? I find it incomprehensible,” Sutton asks the Daily Record.

“Hey, the Argentine isn’t a world champion. He is a left back, though. And while it may have gone undetected at Celtic Park, they are in a problematic position. Right now, they just have Greg Taylor. Despite his regular performance, he has experienced some injury issues.

Celtic are currently without a cover in a title run-in. It’s insane.

It is undeniable that Celtic’s team is weaker now than it was at the beginning of 2024, and Rodgers has lost a consistent goal-scoring threat from wide out with the transfer of Liel Abada to Charlotte FC in the Major League Soccer. After being hired from Rapid Vienna, Nicolas Kuhn has had trouble matching Abada’s influence in Glasgow.

“I understand Liel Abada’s exit. Unfortunate and extremely disheartening, this development has cost Celtic one of their best players. However, it really makes no sense at all to let Bernabei leave following the utter failure of trying to find a replacement in January, Sutton continues.

The absence of David Turnbull at Hearts was what really got me.” Once more, I’m not claiming he’s exceptional. However, he can have an impact on a game while you’re trying to score. However, he left in January without signing a replacement.

“It’s simply strange.”

Adam Idah: An uncommon success tale

Adam Idah, who was bought from Norwich City on loan, has at least made an impact thus far. In his first five Scottish Premiership outings, Idah scored five goals. included two goals in stoppage time that allowed Celtic to stay just a point ahead of Old Firm rivals Rangers at the summit of the standings.

On Sunday, Celtic will play Livingston in the Scottish Cup quarterfinal at Parkhead.

Meanwhile, HITC Football is aware that Bernabei’s move to Internacional was done in an effort to clear the way financially for the entrance of Coaimhin Kelleher. The Liverpool goalkeeper is Celtic’s top pick to succeed retiring Joe Hart, even before Ugurcan Cakir.
