Report: Star who who joined everton set to leave after his first attempt
Beto became the 23rd Everton player to miss a penalty in the Premier League (only Arsenal have missed more, with
24), but who have been the Blues’ spot-kick experts?
After waiting over ten months and going 30 Premier League games without being awarded a penalty – with all other
teams in the division getting one of the 73 given so far this term – Everton were finally awarded their first spot-kick
of 2023/24 when West Ham United’s Kurt Zouma handled the ball in his own area, but even then the decision was
only made after a pitch side VAR monitor check after referee Craig Pawson and his assistants failed to notice
theincident in Beto, who had picked up the ball before the referee even signaled to the spot, took his shot on goal, but it was saved by opposing keeper Alphonse Areola.
Everton has scored 465 of the 664 penalties handed to them in senior matches (70%), with 199 saved or missed, 23
of which were converted on the rebound. In comparison, their opponents have been given 531 penalties, 357 of which
went in (67%) and 174 saved or missed, with 16 of them going in on the rebound.
When penalties were originally introduced in 1891/92, Everton’s penultimate season at Anfield before moving to
Goodison Park, they apparently took some time to adjust to, as the first four awarded in club games all failed to go
in. On Christmas Day 1891, Everton goalkeeper Richard Williams saved Sunderland’s Hughie Wilson’s penalty, while
Everton’s Alex Latta had his spot-kick saved by everton’s Fred Geary missed two penalties: one against Bolton, and
another against Burnley, hitting the post.
Finally, on February 18, 1893, full-back Bob Kelso scored Everton’s and Goodison Park’s first successful penalty,
completing a 3-0 FA Cup quarter-final victory over The Wednesday (as Sheffield Wednesday were called until 1929).
But what about the Blues’ penalty takers during the Premier League era?
