Celtic miss out on free transfer as player chooses another club – Brendan Rodgers’ side now need to look elsewhere
Ger’s efforts to capture FC Twente’s Gijs Smal appear to have failed, as he is set to join Feyenoord on a free transfer rather than Brendan Rodgers’ side.
According to Algemeen Dagblad, Arne Slot and his team have won the race to sign the 26-year-old, beating Celtic to the punch.
They report that Feyenoord will sign Smals on a free transfer in the summer, when his current contract with Twente expires.
He’ll replace Marcos Lopez, who is expected to leave the club in the summer and has already signed a multi-year contract with De Kuip.
There has been plenty of interest in the defender both inside and outside the Netherlands, with a report yesterday revealing that Celtic had already approached him and his agency, outlining the attractions of a possible move to Celtic Park.
However, such attempts appear to have been futile, and Smal has instead decided to stay in the Eredivisie and join Feyenoord as second choice behind Quilindschy Hartman.
Celtic must now shift their transfer focus elsewhere, as this option is no longer available to Brendan Rodgers and his staff.
