Israeli soccer player Liel Abada left Celtic to join Charlotte of the US Major League Soccer League after receiving pressure from his countrymen to leave the Scottish Premiership due to some fans’ statements supporting the Palestinian cause during the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

At an estimated cost of £8 million ($10.25 million), the 22-year-old, who made 112 appearances and scored 29 goals for Celtic, inked a contract with the Charlotte, North Carolina-based squad that would last until 2026.

After missing around four months of play, Abada faced intense domestic pressure to sever ties with Celtic, including remarks made in public by Israel’s team-mates.

“Free Palestine” and “Victory to the resistance” banners flown by Celtic supporters incited ire in Israel and drew criticism from former Hoops midfielder Nir Bitton.

On December 30, Abada returned from injury against Rangers to a thunderous applause. However, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers stated the player was unable to concentrate and acknowledged he could depart.

On February 7, his farewell game ended in a 2-1 triumph over Hibernian; after the game, he headed straight down the tunnel while his teammates celebrated a thrilling comeback win.

Abada posted on Instagram, “Leaving Celtic wasn’t in my plans, but life’s unpredictable turns remind us that we’re not always in control.”

“The past six months have been a personal struggle, but the board, coaches, and gaffer’s unwavering support has been my pillar of strength. Their steadfast faith throughout these trying times will be treasured forever rather than forgotten.

“Thank you to all the Celtic fans,” Abada continued. Despite the challenging times my family and I have been through recently, I would like to express my gratitude to all of the Celtic supporters who have stood by me, encouraged me, and respected me as a Celtic player.

“Everyone at Celtic thanks Liel for his great contribution to the club and we sincerely wish him the very best for the future,” the Scottish champions wrote on their website.

Similar pressure was placed on two Israeli soccer players playing for Turkish teams earlier this year after their support for Israeli captives abducted by Hamas offended local supporters.
