Rangers have agreed terms with Rapid Vienna for the signing of there centre-back mooted as Leon Balogun replacement
Rangers are looking to recruit Rapid Vienna’s Leopold Querfeld after the youngster established himself in the first team, according to HITC.
The outlet reported on their website on March 7 that the Light Blues are one of several British clubs interested in the 20-year-old this season, with his contract scheduled to expire in a year this summer.
Celtic is also tracking the centre-back, as are Premier League clubs Crystal Palace, Fulham, Burnley, and Wolves,
as well as Championship side Leicester City.
Since graduating from Rapid’s academy, the Austrian Under-21 international has made 61 senior appearances for the club.
Rangers looking for new center-back amid Celtic interest
Despite the mainly great form under Philippe Clement,
the last several weeks have shown that the centre-back position might use some improvement.
Connor Goldson remains the de facto number one choice, although he followed up his poor performance against
Theo Bair in Motherwell’s upset victory at Ibrox with a horrific own goal away to Benfica in the Europa League.
His customary teammate under the Belgian, John Souttar, struggled against Stuart Kettlewell’s side as well,
and then conceded a penalty in Lisbon for a handball, despite the pair’s previous outstanding performances.
The former Hearts player has been in and out of the side during the last two seasons at Ibrox,
frequently swapping places with ex-Liverpool player Ben Davies,
who has been unreliable and was rumoured to leave before the season began.
Leon Balogun has provided a calming presence since returning to the club this season, but he will turn 36 in June,
while youngster Leon King appears to have regressed and has only played a few minutes this season.
So it is not surprising that Clement and Nils Koppen would have their eyes on adding to the group,
and Querfeld’s contract status suggests he could be available for a low price,
but if the light Blues do make the interest tangible, a lot will certainly depend on which of the other suitors do as well.
