6 goals in 8 starts; £8m striker accept to join Rangers and clement wanted him at Ibrox

Ike Ugbo’s stunning form at Sheffield Wednesday is proof of why Mick Beale was keen to lure the striker to Rangers during the summer of 2023 with the ex-Chelsea youngster threatening to make history with the Championship outfit.

No Sheffield Wednesday player has ever taken home the Player of the Month trophy in the competition’s history.

That will alter, though, if Ike Ugbo can defeat the opposition and win the February title right under Josh Sargeant, Omar Hutchinson, and Ilya Gruev, the midfielder for Leeds United.Sheffield Wednesday v Birmingham City - Sky Bet Championship

Few would argue that Ugbo, who was connected to Rangers through The Sun in the final stages of the Mick Beale era, isn’t worthy of a piece of Hillsborough history of his own.

The January transfer window saw the Canada international join a loan deal from French team Troyes.

He scored five goals in a row last month. As a matter of fact,

Ukbo has scored six goals and added an assist in his first eight games under Wednesday manager Danny Rohl.

Sheffield Wednesday, a team that didn’t seem to have much hope until recently

has had an incredible run of form that has put them on a four-game winning streak and almost out of the relegation zone.

“You examine the capabilities of (your transfer targets),

and you have a vague notion in your head,” Rohl, who collaborated with Beale at the Chelsea academy, said to The Star of Ugbo. “I’m glad we have these players.”

The manager continues, “(Ugbo) deserved it,”

as Ugbo accepted his role as a talisman by winning a late game against Rotherham United the previous weekend. “He put forth a lot of effort against the ball.

“Knowing he wouldn’t get the ball in his first duty,

pressuring, was difficult. The goal was to force the long ball. He earns his goal because he performed successfully.

Not just a goal scorer, but also a presser Rangers were connected to several forwards over the summer until Beale made the significant financial commitment to bring Danilo and Cyriel Dessers to Ibrox.

Even while many of the aforementioned attacking targets have had difficulty recently

—Matija Frigan and Nikola Krstovic, for example,

have only scored nine goals in the league—Ugbo is one Beale target that may have been worthwhile to pursue.
