Report: Broncos Decline to Re-Sign Defensive Starter
The Denver Broncos focused on their restricted free agents, one of whom is unlikely to return, after taking care of their exclusive-
rights free agents.
Denver has decided not to tender defensive lineman Jonathan Harris, who will become an unrestricted free agent when the league’s
signing period begins next week, according to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on Wednesday. For the 2024 season, the
tender would have cost $2.985 million. After signing with the Broncos during his rookie season in 2019, Harris, 27, was mainly
benched until 2021, spending time on the team’s practice squad. During 529 defensive snaps last season, the former undrafted free
agent made his way into the starting lineup and recorded career-highs of 43 combined tackles, four quarterback hits, and one sack.
But among 130 qualifiers, Harris ranked as Pro Football Focus’ No. 96 inside defender and was a weak point for a team that finished
30th against the run and 29th in total yards allowed.
Using only DE Zach Allen will undoubtedly start in 2024; D.J. Jones, a DT, is a cut candidate; and NT Due to Mike Purcell’s
impending free agency, Denver’s defensive line is expected to receive a major makeover this offseason. The first domino to fall was
Harris; there will be others.
