Rangers may have got lucky escape with £4.7m striker after four goals in 21
If any game summed up Matija Frigan’s situation since the Rangers target moved to Belgium last summer,
it was certainly Westerlo’s 1-0 home defeat to Charleroi on Friday night.
The Croatian’s involvement ruled out Westerlo’s potential early opener. And, by the time he was substituted late on,
Matija Frigan had squandered two wonderful chances of his own,
leaving the struggling striker with just four goals in 21 Jupiler League games.
“We are blinded by the harsh reality of football,” a disgruntled Frigan told Gazet van Antwerpen at halftime,
attempting to make sense of a game in which the visitors won despite Charleroi having only one shot on goal and seven fewer than their unfortunate hosts.
“We didn’t score, (and) Charleroi does.”
Rangers are considered Mateja Frigan
Westerlo hasn’t had much trouble scoring goals this season.
They are the highest scorers in the lower half of Belgium’s top division, with 40 points.
Westerlo have also outperformed third-place Cercle Brugge, despite the superb form of their Chelsea-linked talisman Kevin Denkey.
However, when you consider that Frigan has only four goals from 25 attempts – even if his return is more impressive than it appears when you factor in his XG (WhoScored) – the £4.7 million club record fee Westerlo paid for the former HNK Rijeka striker looks more expensive with each miss.
Strikers must channel their inner Cyriel Dessers.
Rangers were strongly linked with the Croatia under-21 international last summer before settling on Danilo and Cyriel Dessers.
Dessers has recovered from a poor start at Ibrox, scoring seven goals in nine appearances prior to Saturday’s match against Motherwell. Arguably the most improved player throughout the Philippe Clement period.
Frigan would benefit from demonstrating the same resolve as Dessers at a moment when his own eye-watering price-tag is also coming into question.
