Courtland Sutton Sends Message to Broncos in Wake of Russ Release
Courtland Sutton Sends Message to Broncos in Wake of Russ Release
And without warning, things at Denver Broncos headquarters are shifting. Russell Wilson had been hanging over the Broncos and the
fan base like a thunderhead, but on Monday the team finally bit the bullet and announced that Wilson will be released the next week.
The aftershocks are still reverberating through Mile High City on Tuesday. Given that Denver’s salary cap is already $20 million
above, the WilsonThe organization will likely have to make a number of difficult roster changes in order to comply with the cap,
including the release of players.
Veteran wide receiver Courtland Sutton is one such cap-casualty possibility; his projected salary of $13 million in 2024 is subject to
change. Although it’s conceivable, we don’t yet know if Sutton has been approached by the Broncos to discuss adjusting his deal.
But Sutton has removed all reference to the Broncos from his social media sites, as far as we know. Check out his Instagram and X
(formerly Twitter) pages here.
Sutton’s decision to delete the Broncos from his social media accounts may not be related to the team’s possible approach regarding a
contract restructuring. Given how close Sutton is to Wilson, it might also be a response to Monday’s huge announcement.
Sutton’s actual motivation is unknown, although it’s possible that he’s just seeking for a change of scenery in the NFL. Wide receivers
have a history of using both passive and aggressive tactics to sway a team or facilitate a mass departure via social media.
In 2018, Sutton was chosen by Denver in the second round of the draft. Sutton started for the Broncos in Year 2 after backing up the
late, great Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas.
