The NFL offseason is about to become really intense, but the Kansas City Chiefs are holding onto one of their players to avoid the full-

blown free agency process. Gerrit Prince, a tight end, is reportedly returning to the organization on a reserve/futures deal. When the

new league year kicks off next week, he’ll be included in the ninety-man offseason roster.

Prince, a Shawnee native who attended Shawnee Mission Northwest high school in Kansas, signed with Kansas City’s practice squad

last August. He didn’t play in any games during this past regular season. Prior to joining the Chiefs, he was a member of the

Jacksonville Jaguars organization for the 2022-23 campaign after entering the league as an undrafted free agent.

Prince played college ball for five seasons before to entering the NFL. Following a successful 2017 year at Butler, he transferred to

UAB, where over the course of four years, he made 37 appearances in games. The former Second Team All-Conference USA standout

had his greatest season as a senior, catching 36 catches for 699 yards and 10 touchdowns.

This presents Prince, 26, with yet another chance to remain in the professional ranks. The Chiefs had a lot of tight end potential at the

conclusion of the season, thanks to Travis Kelce and Noah Gray, but it’s important to keep an eye on Blake Bell’s and Jody Fortson’s

(restricted) free agency situations. Bell’s blocking prowess is what makes him valuable above all else, but as a pass receiver, he is aging

somewhat quickly. Despite his interesting nature, Fortson has had trouble staying healthy in recent seasons. It’s hardly a given that

either player will make the squad again or get significant playing time in the future.

Organizational depth will be crucial as free agency comes and goes and the offseason program gets underway in April. Prince may be a

late-round pick, but this deal guarantees him a shot at the competition in the upcoming days, weeks, or months. Returning to the club

represents a pleasant full-circle experience for the local product.
