Broncos release Pro Bowler, who joins crowded safety market

When free agency opens on March 13 at 4 p.m. ET next week, there might not be a position more loaded than safety, especially with

the addition of a four-time All-Pro (second team) to the ever-expanding list.

After eight seasons in Denver, Justin Simmons is being released by the Broncos, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter on

Thursday. The team avoids paying the salary cap by $14.5 million thanks to the transaction.

It was somewhat of a surprise to the Broncos that their previous third-round selection from 2016 would be leaving. He had just

finished a Pro Bowl season with 70 tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles, three interceptions,

and eight passes defensed.Simmons (30)

has the most interceptions of any player since he entered the league, according to Schefter. That being said, Denver is still trying to get

under the cap before the new league year, so safety will now be added to the Broncos’ growing list of needs this offseason while

Simmons joins an already talented class of free-agent safety players. Recently, a number of high-profile safeties—including Jordan

Poyer, Jamal Adams, Kevin Byard, Quandre Diggs, Rayshawn Jenkins, Eddie Jackson, and Eddie Jackson—were victims of the salary

cap. Simmons, however, instantly becomes one of the best free agents, despite his age, and will undoubtedly earn the largest salary

possible.

Regarding landing sites, it’s intriguing to observe the Eagles. Philadelphia experienced safety concerns in 2023, and Christian Parker,

Simmons’ former Denver defensive backs coach, is currently an Eagle.

But there might be a bidding war for the newest safety to enter the open market in 2024, as Philadelphia probably won’t be the only

team interested in Simmons’ talents.
