Ulbrich is deeply connected to the Bay Area and the Niners.

The San Francisco 49ers reportedly toyed with the notion of appointing Steve Spagnuolo, the defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, as their DC late last week. The Niners weren’t the only AFC coordinator they had their sights set on.

Despite already having a job, Jeff Ulbrich, the defensive coordinator for the New York Jets, was a well-liked name that made sense for the Niners.

Ulbrich attended the University of San Jose for his collegiate education after attending high school in Morgan Hill, where he was born. After moving to the University of Hawaii, the 47-year-old was selected in the third round by the Niners in 2000. Up until 2009, he played linebacker for the 49ers.

According to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, San Francisco contacted the Jets about Ulbrich’s availability:

Multiple league sources claim that there was a mutual desire in discussing marriage,

but in the end, the Jets made it plain that Ulbrich could not leave.

Teams have the right to prevent contract coaches from

accepting positions with other teams until they are promoted (from position coach to coordinator, or from coordinator to head coach),

which is not what happened in this instance.

Although there were discussions about pursuing Ulbrich, the 49ers never formally asked for an interview with him.

It’s unlikely that Ulbrich would have desired to leave in the end,

but the Jets would have needed draft compensation from the 49ers in order to release him.

Thus, although “internal discussions” may refer to anything as simple as jotting Ulbrich’s name down as a contender,

it doesn’t seem like he was ever in the running to be the 49ers defensive coordinator.

Is this the final name of a possible candidate that we have seen?

Now that the 49ers have their coordinator and assistant head coach,

it’s all history.
