Gers and Celtic have been put on alert after a fresh poll revealed that a section of football fans is supporting the new European Super League proposals.

The notion and plans for a breakaway league for Europe’s best were largely denounced by the football world in 2021, but clubs such as Barcelona, Juventus, and Real Madrid are still eager to push the idea. A22 Sports Management has suggested a new model involving 64 European teams, bolstered by the European Court of Justice’s decision in December that UEFA and FIFA were incorrect to dismiss plans for the breakaway league nearly three years ago.

The competition’s promoters have commissioned French business Opinion Way to conduct a survey of fans across Europe to determine how they perceive the new suggestions. Of the 835 UK fans polled, 65% supported the proposed suggestions, with Chelsea and Manchester City fans leading the way. 509 UK fans registered as supporters of the initial ‘big six’ English clubs that attempted to establish the Super League.

72% of respondents were in favor of or somewhat in favor of A22’s suggested new format. Support peaked in the younger age bracket, with 86% of the 956 15 to 24-year-olds answering yes.

Bernd Reichart, the chief executive officer of A22, said: “We have evidence that the desire for a European Super League as a much more exciting alternative to the current European club football competition is stronger than ever.”

Celtic stated in December that ‘the greater European football community is not supportive of the ESL, and Celtic, like many other clubs, will continue to champion the interests and protection of football’s broader family through the ECA and UEFA. Rangers agreed and stated, ‘We will continue to cooperate with ECA and UEFA to promote the genuine foundations of European football.’

Javier Tebas, the La Liga manager, is adamantly opposed to it. He stated at the Football Summit in London: “A22 wants a few clubs with the largest assets, the richest clubs, to dominate the European football eco-system. This model is significantly worse than the 2019 model. We said ‘no’ to that, and we will say ‘no’ to this.
