Kansas City Chiefs strongly advised to take a gamble on former New York Jets first-round pick in free agency.

If the Kansas City Chiefs want to defend their championship for the third time in a row next season, they must sign a

new left tackle for Patrick Mahomes.

The organization can fully give over the keys to Wanya Morris, especially because Donovan Smith is due to enter free

agency this summer, but he did not have a great enough rookie season to make it a no-brainer.

With that said, the Kansas City Chiefs could look into their AFC rivals for prospective reinforcements, and one high-

risk, high-reward talent to consider is the New York Jets’ 2020 first-round choice, Mekhi Becton, who is scheduled to

enter the open market this month.

Mekhi Becton played 16 games last season, yet PFF rated him as one of the NFL’s lowest-graded tackles (53.2 rating,

66th out of 81).

Why should the Chiefs take a chance on Mekhi Becton?

Brett Veach, the Kansas City Chiefs’ general manager, has a history for discovering diamonds in the rough by

bringing in former first-round picks who underperformed elsewhere, and Becton could fit that criteria.

The major drawback to signing Mekhi Becton is his injury history, as he has played one game or fewer in two of his

four seasons in the NFL.

Although Becton has a calculated market worth of $12.9 million in annual compensation, according to Spotrac, the

Kansas City Chiefs might negotiate for less, especially because the majority of their financial resources are already

committed to L’Jarius Sneed and Chris Jones.

Throughout his NFL career, Mekhi Becton has been a reliable run blocker, getting grades of at least 73.0 in two of his

three healthy seasons. However, his pass protection could be improved, and Kansas City Chiefs offensive line coach

Andy Heck could help him with that.

Additional alternatives for the Kansas City Chiefs.

If the Kansas City Chiefs aren’t fans of Mekhi Becton, they might look to Tyron Smith, who is due to become a free

agency this month, to help their offensive line.
