Chiefs Linked to Big-Name Wide Receiver Ahead of Free Agency
After abruptly releasing Marquez Valdes-Scantling on Wednesday, the Kansas City Chiefs, who won two Super Bowls,
are aiming to upgrade its receiving room.
Rashee Rice, the Chiefs’ rookie wide receiver, led the team with 79 receptions (102 targets) for 938 yards and seven touchdowns this season.
However, Kansas City requires another trustworthy receiver, preferably one who can extend the field.
The Chiefs can fill that need in the 2024 NFL Draft, which features a loaded wide receiver class, or they can look for someone in free agency.
If Kansas City chooses the latter route, a wide receiver should be on their radar.
Chiefs Rumors: Darnell Mooney Could Draw Interest from Kansas City
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said on Sunday that the Chiefs and Tennessee Titans could be interested in veteran wide receiver Darnell Mooney.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of Kansas City being linked to Mooney.
According to Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune, “there’s a small buzz” about Mooney perhaps having a bounce-back season in 2024 at a “great value price,”
and several individuals have mentioned Kansas City.
The 26-year-old wide receiver had a disappointing 2023 season, totaling 31 receptions (61 targets) for 414 yards and one touchdown.
The veteran receiver has failed to reach 500 yards in
his last two seasons after 1,055 yards and four touchdowns in 2021.
Mooney would be an ideal buy-low candidate for the Chiefs since he can fill the vacuum left by Valdes-Scantling.
Spotrac predicts the former Tulane great will sign a four-year, $41 million contract this offseason.
