Celtic told they’d have won the league if
they signed £4m striker in January
In the 2-0 victory at Tynecastle over
Brendan Rodgers‘ team, the Hearts
forward scored, bringing his season total
to 27 goals.
Allan Preston, a former player for Hearts
and current BBC pundit, stated earlier
this season that Shankland was valued at
£4 million. If Celtic had signed
Shankland, their chances of winning the
league would have been
significantly increased.
“And I’ve said this to friends and Hearts
fans won’t want to hear this, but can they
keep him?” Preston asked on [BBC Radio
Scotland]. Very improbable.
“However, if I were Philippe Clement or
Brendan Rodgers, I would have
purchased him in January.”
“I would have given Hearts what they
requested. due to the fact that he scores
goals. Being Scotland’s top striker, he
could have potentially won one of them
the league.
“Having Lawrence Shankland on your
team increases your chances of winning
the league, but it’s going to be close
between them.”
Lawrence Shankland Celtic
striker, perhaps?
In the past few months, while I’ve been
writing for TBR Celtic, I’ve been very
outspoken about this. Although I wasn’t
sure the Hearts striker would improve
the Celtic squad, his goal-scoring efforts
this season have left me in no doubt.
Shankland scored his 27th goal of the
year at Tynecastle against Celtic. The 28-
year-old tops the SPFL goal scoring lists
and has 20 goals to his name in the
league. [Transfermarkt]
With those goals in this Celtic team and
the number of opportunities Rodgers’
group provides, one can’t help but
question if Celtic would have lost to
Aberdeen, Kilmarnock, and Hearts since
the winter break began if Shankland had
been on the team.
Regretfully, we will never find out. And I
think everyone can agree that there is no
longer, if ever, a window of opportunity
to sign Shankland.
