Rangers and Celtic title prediction shared by Keith Jackson after ‘chaotic’ weekend
Rangers opened the door for Celtic to return to the top over the weekend, succumbing to a shock 2-1 defeat against Motherwell on Saturday (2 March).
However, Celtic were thrashed 2-0 away at Hearts the next day, leaving them two points behind in second place.
In his column for the Daily Record’s print edition [4 March, pages 37 & 38], Jackson reflected on the weekend’s events: “Now that every man and his dog in the SPFL are busy writing their own stories, perhaps they ought to remember the importance of a good plot.”
“And if they find one they like, they should do everything they can to keep with it. Because there’s a significant difference between establishing and losing a storyline.
“And, over the course of a perfectly crazy weekend, Rangers and Celtic took turns doing just that.
“You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to understand what’s at stake now that the finish line is in sight in the fight for the title.
Rangers lost their composure on Saturday, when all they needed was a routine victory against Motherwell to open up a five-point advantage at the top of the league.
“Whoever manages best to stick to the plot over these next few manic weeks is likely to come away with a happy ending.”
Rangers retain a two-point advantage over Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
Rangers had gained a lot of momentum under Philippe Clement, but the winning streak would not last the rest of the season.
The setback to Motherwell was unexpected, but it will not be the last time the Gers drop points before the season ends.
At this stage, it’s simply a matter of matchingd stride for stride while keeping in mind the two-point buffer between the teams.
Weekends don’t get much more dramatic than what we’ve seen over the last few days. Indeed, this is the first occasion in six years that the Old Firm has fallen on the same weekend.
Both Rangers and Celtic have players and managers who have held their nerve in a title race, and those seasoned leaders must stand up.
Supporters, for their part, must be with the team every step of the way, even if the results do not go as planned.
With two months left in the season, prepare for a few more twists and turns.
