Rafael Nadal drops a major clue about his plans in advance of his “farewell” match at Indian Wells.
In Sunday’s “Netflix Slam” in Las Vegas, Rafael Nadal made a comeback to action with a thrilling match against Carlos Alcaraz. But how many more times will we see the Spanish legend on the court?
As he made a cautious comeback to action for the first time since suffering an injury in the Brisbane International tournament in January, Rafael Nadal appeared understandably rusty.
In an attempt to be ready to play against Alacraz in Las Vegas and at the Indian Wells tournament this week, the Spanish legend acknowledged he has been troubled once more. His appearance in Australia marked his first attempt at a comeback since he suffered a serious hip problem at the 2023 Australian Open.
I’m thinking of competing in Indian Wells right now. “I’d adore to compete in Monte Carlo,” Rafael Nadal declared in Las Vegas.
“After that, at this stage of my career, I have to evaluate my emotions, my whole state of mind, and the games I want to play.
“I’ll do my best to increase my chances of achieving my goals. To be happy, I want to pursue the things I truly love to do.
Nadal continued by saying he wasn’t sure when his career will end, but it’s obvious that his failing body might put an end to his plans to play for the entire year in 2024.
Nadal went on, “I’m not saying goodbye because then I’d say I’m not playing anymore.”
I hesitate to make this crucial point because I’m not entirely sure how to phrase it. I haven’t been able to play for the past two years.
Life is pointing out the way for you. How did I picture saying goodbye? I didn’t visualize it at first because the more you imagine something, the closer you are to realizing it. It was not what I was envisioning. I want to leave the court having had fun, being competitive, and saying goodbye.
