Leon Balogun to replace John Souttar against Benfica
Leon Balogun to replace John Souttar against Benfica
The Nigerian re-signed with the club last summer on a one-year contract, bringing some experience to the squad.
The veteran has only appeared in 14 games, but when he has, Balogun has looked solid.
In his 11 league games this season, the defender has helped his team keep a clean sheet in seven of them, made 1.5 tackles and interceptions per game, and won an incredible 8.3 total duels per game – a 70% success rate – demonstrating how successful he is when used.
Benfica will be a difficult opponent to beat, but unleashing Balogun in place of Souttar appears to be the most sensible choice, and it might provide Clement with new legs in the heart of the defence.
The next Premiership match is not until next weekend, so this break from league competition may be a blessing in disguise, especially after the terrible performance against Motherwell.
The Belgian will now see how his team responds to such a disappointment when they travel to Portugal this week, and any positive outcome will be viewed as a great success.
There will be some adjustments, but Balogun should definitely be brought in to partner Goldson.
