Update:Rangers 1–2. Motherwell: Bair dominates as Clement’s team falters.
Rangers wasted an opportunity to increase their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership when they lost 2-1 to Motherwell on Saturday, March 2.
Philippe Clement’s team fell down after nine minutes at Ibrox when Theo Blair took advantage of a defensive blunder
to break the deadlock, but the Gers appeared to be on their way to a second-half revival when James Tavernier converted a penalty.
But it was the away side who found a late winner, as Dan Casey headed home with 15 minutes to play, giving Celtic a
golden opportunity to go top of the Premiership when they meet Hearts on Sunday (3 March).
Ibrox News rated the Gers players out of ten.
Jack Butland – 5
The England international has been in excellent form this season and could do little to stop the visiting team’s
opening. Butland will be upset that he was unable to save the second goal, since he had a strong touch on the ball
before it went in. Hopefully, it was simply a minor wobble and not cause for concern among supporters.
James Tavernier – 6
As he frequently does, the Gers skipper rose to the occasion and scored a second-half penalty to bring the Light Blues
level. However, it was the right-back’s man who scored the away team’s winner when he slid away from Tavernier and peeled off into the back post.
Connor Goldson – 6
Goldson has been a regular presence at centre-back this season, and he was once again strong in Saturday’s match,
despite a wayward elbow to the face midway through the second half. However, the centre-back just had to score
with his late shot, and his failure proved costly for Clement’s team.
John Souttar – 3
The away side’s opener made a huge error by flying across the field and completely missing the bouncing ball.
The centre-back has appeared fragile in recent weeks, making a handful of careless mistakes, and while he improved
as the game progressed, he did not inspire his teammates.
Ridvan Yilmaz – 7
Seemed to be one of the players caught out by Motherwell’s free-kick ahead of their opening goal.
After a couple of stray passes in the opening exchanges, the Turkish defender improved as the game wore on with
some excellent passes and balls into the penalty area. Best of a bad bunch. When fit, Yilmaz has to start ahead of Borna Basiric.
Mohammed Diomande – 5
The midfielder came close to scoring with a fantastic acrobatic effort in the first half. Didn’t accomplish much in the
game, but lost the ball on the edge of the penalty area just before the winning goal. Diomande has excelled during his
brief Rangers tenure, but he was not at his best on Saturday.
