The Ukrainian was down 4-2 in the second set and had dropped nine of the opening 11 games of the match. In the first set, No. 35-ranked Kalinina won just 46% of her first-serve points; in the third, that percentage rose to 80%. After making it to the Rome final in May of last year, she advances to her first semifinal.

In the semifinals, Kalinina will take against Wang Xiyu, the No. 6 seed. Wang reached her second semifinal of the year when Danielle Collins, the third-seeded player, withdrew from their quarterfinal match with an injury.

Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia also made it to the semifinals by way of retirement. Schmiedlova was defeated 6-4, 2-1 by Latvia’s Anastasia Sevastova, who then hurt her left leg. Sevastova, serving at 2-1, 30-40, dashed forward to block a short ball near the net, but her swipe sent her tumbling on the ground.

Following her treatment by the medical team, Sevastova was able to get up and move alone to her bench. She finished the match after playing one point on the restart. In a wheelchair, she was wheeled off the court.

Schmiedlova remarked, “I don’t really feel that I deserve it today.” “I apologize for the things that happened to Anastasia. That’s not what I want for any athlete. I’m hoping she heals quickly.

“She’s a great player, she played really good today and she deserved to win it.”

In the semifinals, Schmiedlova will play Wang Yifan or Yuan Yue, the eighth-seeded player. She is attempting to qualify for her first WTA final since Hobart in 2019.
