Chiefs named ‘Obvious choice’ to sign Bears $42 million WR

For the NFL Scouting Combine, head coach Andy Reid and general manager Brett Veach of the Kansas City Chiefs are in Indianapolis.

They are not only scouting the best possible prospects but also getting ready for free agency.

The Chiefs must improve at wide receiver if they hope to have a legitimate shot at winning three straight Super Bowls.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling was already let go by Kansas City,

Darnell Mooney freeing up about $12 million in salary space. Darnell Mooney,

a potential free agent for the Chicago Bears,

is anticipated to sign with Kansas City, per a recent report

.”On a lower-profile note, some chatter in Indy from folks eager to see where WR Darnell Mooney lands in a week and a half,

” wrote Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune on March 2.

There’s a little chatter about Mooney perhaps having a 2024 comeback at a very competitive pricing.

KC was recommended by several people.

Spotrac.com projects that Mooney will sign a $41.98 million,

four-year contract. Veach might make things work if the 26-year-old is prepared to accept a lower salary in exchange for receiving passes from Patrick Mahomes.

Brendan Sugrue of The Bears Wire wrote, “KC has always been the obvious choice.

” I can’t help but wonder how he would appear in a different offense with a (probably) new quarterback back in Chicago.

However, I’m positive that ship has sailed.

“It’s ‘every wide receiver is going to KC’ szn

, though Mooney actually does make a lot of sense,

” Connor Christopherson of Arrowhead Report noted.

Matt Nagy was the Chicago head coach when the Bears selected Mooney in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Nagy became an offensive coordinator for the Chiefs in their most recent season after joining their coaching staff in 2022.

The Tulane graduate’s best seasons as a player happened while Nagy was head coach.

Mooney caught 61 catches for 631 yards and four scores in his debut campaign.

He recorded 81 receptions for 1,055 yards and four touchdowns in 2021. Mooney’s stats fell off without Nagy.

The receiver had 71 catches for 907 yards and three touchdowns during the previous two seasons.

Mooney has averaged 4.5 targets per game over the last two seasons,

down from 7.2 targets per game in his first two years.
