Former Chelsea scout Chris Robinson is pleased to see Stamford Bridge graduate Dujon Sterling ‘doing very well’ at

Rangers while explaining Jose Mourinho’s role in the defender’s lack of chances in the Premier League.

So versatile is Dujon Sterling that, if Jack Butland ever picks up an injury – heaven forbid – then it would not come

as too much of a surprise to learn that the summer signing from Chelsea is pretty comfortable between the sticks too.

Rangers signed Sterling as a right-back when his Blues contract expired last summer. The 24-year-old has featured

more often in midfield, however, exceptional in a deep-lying destroyer role against Real Betis in the Europa League

before thriving as a chaos-stirring, wrecking-ball winger during convincing wins over St Johnstone and Hearts.

Sterling make good on his obvious potential north of the border. And, casting his mind back to the Islington-born

enforcer’s early days in West London, Robinson wonders if Sterling may have been a victim of Jose Mourinho’s

short-termism approach to mangement.

“When Jose Mourinho was there for the second time, the team weren’t doing very well,” Robinson tells Rising

Ballers. “We had a right-back, Dujon Sterling, who is now doing very well at Rangers. A flying right-back. Boy, he

was quick. “We were winning Youth Cups, and Chelsea’s first-team was not doing well.

“Branislav Ivanovic was not doing well (but) Jose Mourinho would pick Ivanovic every week over Dujon Sterling.

Partly because Jose has never really picked young players – he trusts certain senior players because he knows his

time at clubs is very limited.”

Jose Mourinho never gave him a chance Sterling would never play a Premier League game for Chelsea before his

departure in 2023, although he did feature once in the EFL Cup. His tactical flexibility and the sheer variety of his

skillset, however, is threatening to make Sterling – who has now played 23 times for the Ibrox outfit – one of the

most inspired pieces of business in Rangers’ recent history.

“Sterling has been a revelation in that (midfield) role,” former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson told the Daily Record.

“He is like a stallion in the middle of the pitch. Big, strong, mobile and athletic but, more than that, he can see and

play a pass. “He was outstanding in the cup final (vs Aberdeen), and really good in the second half against Real Betis

in Seville when he came on at the break. So he’s shown he can handle big pressure situations.”
