Update:Rangers’ £14,092,000 goalie eliminates any questions about England’s Euro 2024 prospects.
The Gers went into the break 1-0 down at Rugby Park, and it was an uncertain evening for the club against Derek
McInnes’ tenacious and disciplined Kilmarnock side.
Rangers struggled to settle against Killie, who were well worth their lead, and Butland has subsequently revealed a
dramatic half-time reminder that refocused Rangers’ goals at the break.
But if the goalkeeper hadn’t made a miraculous save to deny Kilmarnock’s Marley Watkins only minutes into the
second period, Rangers might have slipped up in 2024 under Philippe Clement.
Jack Butland proves England Euro 2024 credentials
The Jack Butland save, in which he gets down low to block Watkins’ goal-bound shot, exemplifies why England
manager Gareth Southgate is keeping a watch on the Rangers goalkeeper for Euro 2024.
Jack Butland, who has nine caps, has not been in a Three Lions team in more over five years, and reports say he will
be called up for the friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.
And if Gareth Southgate had any doubts about the goalkeeper’s match-winning abilities, he simply needed to look at
Rangers’ eventual 2-1 triumph over Kilmarnock.
Rangers would have faced a two-goal deficit and risked losing their lead in the Scottish Premiership if Jack Butland
had not stopped the Kilmarnock attacker.
The save demonstrates that Jack Butland is a goalkeeper for big times, and it eliminates any doubt that he has the
star talent to be a part of England’s Euro 2024 squad.
Rangers’ goalkeeper plays important Kilmarnock role.
The Rangers goalkeeper made a major contribution, which Killie manager Derek McInnes did not miss.
The Killie manager felt that the quality demonstrated by the Jack Butland save was the difference between the two
teams, and the Rangers goalkeeper was questioned about the incident after the game.
Butland characterized it as a “huge moment” and believed that the rest of the team used it to boost their confidence
and win the match.
“To be honest, it was a huge moment,” Butland told RangersTV. “I guess the lad felt he had scored,
so it’s good to have that moment, but it can also knock the wind out of a team’s sails.
“It seemed to give us a lift, it could have gone a little bit sideways at that point if that goes on,
so it is nice to contribute with that and ultimately set us up for a really big second half.”
Jack Butland had made 43 appearances for Rangers this season, surrendering 31 goals and maintaining 22 clean sheets.
