Russians Club sign a Rangers player
Prior to joining Cruzeiro, Jose Cifuentes disclosed that he was being pursued by a few Russian teams during the
January transfer window. The Ecuadorian international was just brought to Ibrox in August of last year,
but he was given a 12-month loan with a buyout option to the Brazilian team.
Cifuentes could have stayed in Europe with an unnamed Russian club, but the country’s ongoing war with Ukraine
meant that was not possible.
“There were two Russian teams who wanted to sign me,” he is quoted as saying by The Scotsman [1 March].
“With the war that is going on there, it was something that could not be carried out because European teams are not
allowed to receive money from Russian clubs at the moment. “A Turkish club as well as a team from the English
Championship expressed interest.” However, it would have only been a five-month loan, which would have required
them to move away from their families once more after having to adjust to life in Scotland.
I’m in Brazil because I had to choose what was best for them, which is why I made this decision. It was a beautiful
day when I made my Cruzeiro debut last week. “During my six months with Rangers, I never saw the sun. It was
consistently chilly. But I’m in good shape, so I should have no trouble adjusting to this place.Although I prefer to
play as an offensive midfielder, I adjust my positioning depending on the club I’m playing for.
Jose Cifuentes is already a forgotten character at the Rangers
Even though Cifuentes left on loan at first, it seems reasonable to presume that his six months in Glasgow are up.
Sam Lammers and Cifuentes were the greatest busts in a summer that saw, at best, somewhat mediocre transfer
activity. When Cifuentes arrived from Los Angeles FC, there was a lot of expectation for him, and the Gers received a
lot of interest in signing him. But he failed to establish his indispensable status, and Philippe Clement finally
concluded he was surplus to requirements. In the Scottish Premiership, Cifuentes made just six starts overall, and in
a few years, supporters will probably forget about him. Despite signing a four-year contract last summer, his Ibrox
deal is officially set to end on that date, but he won’t be sticking with it.
But it says a lot that a number of teams were interested in him in January, and there’s no reason he can’t
immediately restart his career in South America.
