Cifuentes opens up on the Ibrox exit.

Jose Cifuentes has discussed his move from Rangers to Cruzeiro.

The Ecuadorian departed Ibrox on loan to the Brazilian club in January, six months after joining from the MLS.

Cifuentes’ impact on the Rangers first team was limited, and he stated of the January transfer window:

“Two Russian teams wanted to sign me. However, due to the ongoing war, it was impossible to carry out since European teams are not currently permitted to receive funds from Russian clubs, I believe.

An English Championship team was interested, as was a Turkish club.

However, it would have been a five-month loan, which would have required them to uproot from their families after already adjusting to Scotland, which would have been problematic.

So I had to make the greatest decision for them, which is why I am here in Brazil.

I made my Cruzeiro debut last week on a sunny day. I didn’t see the sun in the six months I was with Rangers. It was consistently frigid.

But my fitness is good, and I believe I will quickly adapt here. I prefer to play as an aggressive midfielder, although my positioning depends on the team.

Van Hooijdonk insists no talks

Striker Sydney van Hooijdonk, who was linked with a move to Celtic in the January transfer window, has confirmed that he did not speak with the Scottish champions during the winter.

The 24-year-old Dutchman, son of ex-Celtic forward Pierre, left Bologna to join Norwich City on loan, and when asked about the gossip surrounding him, Van Hooijdonk replied:

“To be honest, I didn’t speak with Celtic this winter.” You see a lot of things, but this winter, I didn’t talk to them.

Yes, last summer there was some. It is a great club, and I am a fan of theirs, but the Championship and a team in contention for the play-offs was really pleasant. This league operates at a higher level.

Ferguson changes his tune

Rangers great Barry Ferguson has admitted that his initial impressions on goalkeeper Jack Butland joining the Ibrox club were mistaken.

The England goalkeeper joined Rangers on a free transfer in the summer and has been one of the club’s standout players this season,

impressing even more with an amazing stop in Wednesday’s 2-1 win against Kilmarnock. Ferguson wrote in his Daily Record column:

In fact, I’m not hesitant to say Butland ranks among Goram, Klos, and McGregor as one of the best Rangers goalkeepers I’ve ever seen.”

Carter-Vickers glad to be back

Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers is happy to be back in action as the Premiership title race heats up.

The 26-year-old has been in and out of the squad with hamstring issues this season, having missed the end of the previous season due to knee surgery.

He came in as a second-half substitute against Motherwell at Fir Park over the weekend, after missing a month due to his most recent injury.

Carter-Vickers was reinstated into the starting lineup against Dundee at Celtic Park on Wednesday night, and he scored the opening goal in a 7-1 thrashing – his first counter since March of last year – to keep Brendan Rodgers’ side two points behind league leaders Rangers.

The United States international stated, “It’s been tough for me to be in and out with injuries.

I’m trying to stay active while also contributing to the team’s success. I just did the best rehab I could. I got 30 minutes at the weekend and 60 minutes against Dundee. So that’s helpful.

I’m hoping to work my way back into it. It’s the same hamstring on the right side, which also happens to be my knee side.

This is definitely the first season in my career that I’ve been so injured. But I believe that if you want to have a long career, you will have one or two seasons like that. So you just have to get on.
