Breaking news:Rangers star creates major ‘issue’ for national team.
Ianis Hagi has generated a stir in Romanian media as he is set to be dropped from the Romania squad for Euro 2024.
Hagi, a Rangers loanee, just lost his starting berth with the La Liga club, and his agent has voiced skepticism that he
will travel to the Euros unless something happens between now and the conclusion of the season.
Hagi has been capped 30 times by his country, and being the son of Romanian icon Gheorghe, he retains a unique
position in the eyes of fans.
The media in his home country fawned over his plight at Rangers, and his relocation to Spain,
where he hopes to find regular game time following 18 months of injury torment at Ibrox, was well reported.
And it appears that this is no different now, as Romanian pundits disagree on whether he should attend the Euros.
Former footballer Ionut Lupescu told Digisport that Hagi’s absence from the Euros would be acceptable as long as
manager Edward Iordanescu explained his choice openly and publicly.
Referring to the 1994 World Cup, in which Romania reached the quarter-finals, he stated:
“I wouldn’t regard Ianis’ absence from the Euro as an issue as long as (Romania manager) Edi Iordanescu
establishes and announces clear criteria for the final squad.
“Remember how astonished the public was by Marius Lacatus and Ioan Sabau’s withdrawal from the team for the
World Cup in America!
But once the matches begin, the world forgets and focuses on the emotion of the game. “The important thing is to win.”
His former teammate Florin Raducioiu disagreed that it is not a concern.
He believes Hagi has enough credit to be picked nonetheless, despite the fact that he has not started a league game
since December.
He stated: “It is a challenge that we will face. It’s a dilemma for the coach and the staff. There are players who
qualified us with their goals,
such as Hagi and Razvan Marin, who clearly have problems with the club team. “They should play as much as possible.”
