More details emerge on Celtic’s January
stance involving Matt O’Riley amid
Despite strong interest from other teams
for Matt O’Riley’s services in January,
Celtic was able to cling onto him.
With 10 goals and 12 assists in 35 games
this season, the Danish international has
been a vital member of the Bhoys
[Transfermarkt].
As everyone is aware, Brendan Rodgers
had to maintain his composure when
Atletico Madrid made moves for O’Riley
during the midseason transfer window.
The 23-year-old was eager to join Diego
Simeone’s La Liga powerhouses on a
temporary loan with a purchase option
in the summer, but Celtic resisted and
made a strong effort to hold onto their
best player.
The former MK Dons midfielder was also
interested in joining Girona and Inter
Milan, but he ultimately decided to stay
at Parkhead for the remainder of his
career.
Shortly after, Rodgers told [Sky Sports]
that he would not be leaving Scotland.
“There was that, but Matt is a player we
don’t want to lose, and he won’t be going
anywhere in January,” he said.
Though we all understand how crucial
O’Riley is to our prospects of winning the
Scottish Premiership, his form has
somewhat declined in recent weeks.
New information on interest in
Celtics
player Matt O’Riley in January
Atletico Madrid reportedly tried to sign
O’Riley on a loan-to-buy agreement from
Celtic, which would have required a
permanent move of £18 million in the
summer, according to Danish publication
Tipsbladet.
The publication claimed that the Bhoys
refused to sell for less than £25 million,
but they persisted still.
The defending Scottish champions’
response went unanswered by Atletico
Madrid, allowing O’Riley to remain in
Glasgow.
The 23-year-old will undoubtedly be the
subject of more rumors throughout the
summer about his future, particularly if
he is selected for Denmark’s EURO 2024
team, which is O’Riley’s main goal.
If Celtic had lost his services midway
through their attempt to win a domestic
double, they would have given up on the
chance to spite their face.
He should play a significant role in the
final stretch as the team attempts to win
more trophies and Rodgers aims to have
a good first season back at Parkhead.
