‘I want to hear the reasons’ – Rangers Gaffer demands explanation for ridiculous penalty
Philippe Clement lauded Rangers’ “resilience, mentality, and solidarity” after they rallied from behind to defeat Kilmarnock and maintain their two-point lead at the top of the league.
The Ibrox side trailed to Danny Armstrong’s early penalty, but two second-half goals in short succession from James Tavernier and Tom Lawrence secured the victory.
Clement joined his players in celebrating in front of the massive traveling crowd, and the Belgian acknowledged it was a significant victory for his team.
He stated: “[We demonstrated] resilience, mentality, solidarity, and the ability to adapt. After 10 minutes, you receive this penalty, which was a frustrating moment. You then have an opponent that sits back and waits for your blunders to make counterattacks, which can be dangerous.
“We played too slowly in the first half. We needed some time to adjust because it was a whole different style of play. At times, I felt my players were like Bambi on ice. They had to adapt to this, and we discussed it at halftime.
“After that, they were excellent. We were big in every sense: resilience, tempo, and fighting spirit. This is no longer a collection of players who halt, quit, get nervous, or form islands. They remain together, fight hard, and demonstrate excellence.
“Without that mindset, you cannot win championships. That’s one thing. But it’s about verifying that game after game.”
Clement also believed Rangers should have received a late penalty after Scott Wright’s cross appeared to brush Lewis Mayo’s arm, but VAR did not award it.
He went on to say, “We had a penalty against us, but we could have had an easier last five minutes if we had also been given a penalty.” I’d like to know why they gave the first penalty but not the second. That’s really not clear to me.”
Derek McInnes praised his team’s effort and said the outcome depended on important moments.
The Kilmarnock manager stated, “There was no difference in performance between us and Rangers tonight.” But Jack Butland’s save at 1-0 demonstrates how good he is.
“Tavernier’s free kick, at first I thought he had gone past the wall and was blaming my goaltender and screamed at my goalie coach, but the height he reached to get it up and over the wall was top class.
“And for their second goal, the ball breaks to Tom Lawrence, who scores an incredible strike. However, I felt that we were getting good value for our money from the game. Our fans showed up believing we could win today, which demonstrates how far we’ve gone.
